Tampa, FL – In Friday’s wild Class 2A-Region 3 Final 36-32 Cambridge Christian victory over Admiral Farragut there were impressive plays over the field at host Jefferson. The Lancers rallied back from a 25-7 deficit heading into the final quarter to outscore the Blue Jackets 29-7 to secure its first-ever state semifinal appearance.

Here are the three players that stuck out in this high scoring regional final matchup.

Derrick Powell Jr. (Cambridge Christian)

Following a Jaylin Jackson two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, the Blue Jackets faced a third and long against a Cambridge Christian defense that had its fans rocking. Leading his team in interceptions on the season (6), sophomore Derrick Powell Jr. jumped the route and picked off the errant pass and then proceeded to dash in for a 15-yard touchdown.

The Lancers regained the lead for the first time since the opening quarter and that momentum stayed on Cambridge Christian’s side the rest of the night. Powell Jr. had two huge pass breakups on long balls to 6’5″ wideout Matthew Landers with just over six minutes left.

This kid has a very bright future. At 5’10”, 155 lbs, he’s not only fast, but he’s elusive and he showed that on his game-changing interception return touchdown.

RB Andrew Cunningham (Cambridge Christian)

The offensive MVP all season long has been sophomore back Andrew Cunningham. Cunningham had been held to a couple of short first downs for a one-dimensional Cambridge Christian all night, but then with 7:02 left, he broke free for the game-winning 53-yard touchdown run.

The Lancers were trailing 32-29 prior to the huge play. Cunningham got into the middle of the field and just kept flying and the Blue Jackets couldn’t catch him. He finished with 18 rushes for 127 yards and the score.

Admiral Farragut’s defense had to deal with his power runs all night and it was clear at that point he found a big hole against an exhausted Blue Jackets defense. Cunningham is only going to get better next year. He has 23 rushing touchdowns on the season, averaging over 10 yards per carry.

DB/WR Dontell Green (Admiral Farragut)

Senior Dontell Green is a pure athlete and he flashed that all night long on Friday. With five minutes left in the opening quarter, Green intercepted Jaylin Jackson and the Blue Jackets regained posession.

Just four minutes later, he hauled in a 13-yard touchdown grab to put his team ahead for the first time all night at 12-7. Admiral Farragut took that lead into the half. Here’s a look at Green’s touchdown score.

Green is a 5’9″, 170-pounder, who hasn’t committed to play at the next level. I can bet you that he’ll be playing somewhere next fall just yet. He has too much talent not to. On both sides of the ball, he can make you pay. Below is a view of one of Green’s pass breakups on the night. He has very solid insticts as a cover corner.

Honorable mentions:

Cambridge Christian – Sophomore Caleb Young (22-yard touchdown in the first quarter, interception to close out the game in the fourth).

Admiral Farragut – Junior Donnie Crum (two 90-plus yard kickoff return touchdowns, a 98-yarder to open the second half and a 93-yarder in the fourth quarter).

Junior defensive end Jeremiah Zio (A forced fumble and a tackle for a loss in the first quarter. Played to his size at 6’7″.)
