TAMPA – Tampa Prep senior guard Tyson Ward proved once again that he can play on both ends of the floor. Finishing with a game-high 19 points along with 10 rebounds and four assists, Ward hustled for 32 minutes on his home floor as the Terrapins (18-10) got by Shorecrest Prep 52-47 in the Class 3A-Region 2 quarterfinal on Thursday night.

Averaging 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game this season, Ward broke two of his three averages. He picked up his eighth double-double of the year and now has scored 10 or more points in 27 of 28 games.

Not only did he look smooth attacking the rim, he has nice range evident by his outside shooting ability. At 6’5″ Ward is also a seasoned passer. He made some very impressive passes inside especially to sophomore Trey Sibert who paced him with 14 points.

Scouts from Virginia Tech and Boston College were in the house watching Ward in the big moment. He certainly impressed.

Ward’s best quarter came in the third when he added eight points as the Terrapins took a 43-33 advantage into the final quarter. He had a towering block to end the second quarter and helped Tampa Prep go on a 12-2 run to regain momentum after coming out flat in the first quarter, trailing 13-9 after eight minutes of play.

Here’s a clip of Ward draining a 3-pointer in the second quarter as the Terrapins cut the deficit to 19-18 and moments later took the lead for good. The closest the score got after that was a 29-28 advantage for Tampa Prep early in the third quarter.

Ward is part of a very disciplined group under 33rd-year head coach Joe Fenlon. I knew this one would be close and now with a home region semifinal matchup on tap for Tuesday against Seffner Christian, Tampa Prep will have to come out swinging. Seffner is 2-1 against the Terrapins this season with its lone loss coming in the district final.

Tuesday should be a good game and Ward says his group knows plenty about the Crusaders since this will be the fourth meeting between the two teams this season.
