TAMPA – Thursday night’s spring jamboree at Plant served as a nice preview for the three teams that participated. Robinson opened up against Plant before the Panthers battled Jefferson in the second quarter and then the Knights squared off against Jefferson in the third and final quarter.

In the first quarter between Plant and Robinson, the Panthers won 6-0 as quarterback Dane Frantzen scored the lone touchdown on a 25-yard run. He performed well all night and looked very comfortable on throws and runs.

The second quarter against Jefferson again went Plant’s way as Frantzen helped the Panthers add two more touchdowns. The first came on a 19-yard touchdown to Ty Thompson on 4th and 10. Frantzen later recorded his second rushing touchdown on a keeper from two yards out.

Jefferson went on to beat Robinson in the third quarter matchup as Jermaine Eskridge and Ahmarean Brown scored touchdowns late in the game. Brown took a short throw and used his shake and bake skills to get all the way into the endzone.

Here’s a video of Eskridge’s touchdown. It was a great play on both sides of the ball, he just fought for it and won the battle.

The top performers from Plant

QB Dane Frantzen

The rising senior accounted for all three touchdowns. He delivered big throws on third and fourth downs and used his legs to perfection more often than not. Frantzen as a strong arm.

WR Juwan Burgess

Wanted by basically every top college program, the rising senior is a pure athlete on both sides of the ball. He hauled in a ridiculous 67-yard bomb from Frantzen against Robinson (video here). Burgess is overpowering to say the least.

WR Christian Watson

Accounting for another reliable threat every time he touches the ball is Christian Watson. The rising senior had a 50-yard catch against Jefferson (video here) along with a couple of other clutch grabs. He is in for a big season.

LB Thomas Allen

At 6’3″, 230 lbs. rising senior does just about everything you want out of a linebacker. He stays in his gap and has very good pursuit running downhill. He nearly had an interception that went through his hands against Robinson.

DB Romello Walters

A rising junior, Walters is quick footed and finds his way around the ball. Although he was called for a pass interference, two plays later he came up with a leaping interception to make up for it. He has very good ball skills.

Honorable mentions: RB Ty Thompson, TE Judge Culpepper, WR De’Angelo Philyor, LB Bryce Love

The top performers from Jefferson

CB Deandre Hollins

Hollins is a rising junior and he sure plays older than his current age. He is a stud in coverage and gets his team amped up on every snap. Hollins blocked a field goal attempt against Plant.

S Dewayne Godwin

The safety came up with two interceptions, one against Plant and another against Robinson. He looked sharp and find his way around the ball often.

WR Jermaine Eskridge

It took him a while to break out for a big play but he saved it right until the end with a touchdown against Robinson in the closing minutes. The video is attached earlier in the story.

LB Markeem Bell

As a linebacker Bell was solid in coverage shutting down Plant’s top weapons and performing well against Robinson.

WR Ahmarean Brown

It was a rather quiet night for Brown up until he busted loose for a 50 plus yard touchdown late against Robinson. He juked multiple defenders and used his speed perfectly.

Honorable mentions: RB Dontavius Smith, WR Terrell Jackson, DT Jacques Jean-Baptiste and QB Matt Gaffney

The top performers from Robinson

DL Anthony Krouse

The rising senior is around the ball carrier on each every run play and holds his own in coverage. He had a handful of tackles tonight and a sack against Plant.

QB/DB Najee Fitzgerald

Even though he stands at 5’9″, Fitzgerald is deceivingly strong for an undersized quarterback and defensive back. He had some nice runs and recovered a fumble defensively. Here’s a video of him picking up a first down on a powerful run.

RB Taquan Mason

Mason filled in admirably for Anfernee Alston and did his part as a hitter on both special teams and defense. He will have a key role for the Knights this season.

LB Eli Morris

Much like Krouse, Morris is very mobile and finds his way around each play. He is a smart and talented tackler.

DB Eann Johnson

Johnson had an interception early in the first quarter against Plant on Franzten’s worst throw of the day, an underthrow.

Honorable mentions: LB/QB Chase Volpi, DB Kyriece Lake, RB/LB Jaquan Jackson and DB Vincent Fuggetta

Note: Scouts from Boston College, Indiana, Syracuse, Virginia, Oregon State, Massachusetts, Missouri and Buffalo were all in attendance for this one.

Key inactives: Jefferson QB Cade Weldon, Robinson RB Anfernee Alston and Plant QB Kyle Trina.
