The second round of the high school football playoffs is in the books. This is where history happens for these kids and where the better teams stand out from the lesser opponents.
Round 3 is always fun and there are a ton of awesome matchups around the state of Florida. Here are nine games that I’ll take a look at and give you my prediction.
Vero Beach (11-0) at Dr. Phillips (10-2)
Dr. Phillips plays host to Vero Beach in a Class 8A region final. The Indians are in this round for the first time in 13 years. As for the Panthers, they are a seasoned group who certainly hold an edge at home. This should be a battle till the end.
Prediction: Dr. Phillips 31, Vero Beach 24
Viera (9-2) at Plant (11-0)
Plant had to come back to beat Lakeland last week and now the Panthers find themselves in the Class 7A region final. Senior quarterback Dane Frantzen has been the heart and soul for Plant while junior signal caller Tim Demorat is a dynamic playmaker for the Hawks.
Prediction: Plant 27, Viera 20
East Lake (9-1) at Venice (11-0)
The Indians beat Braden River to get into this 7A region final while East Lake upset Tampa Bay Tech. Venice is red hot and an impressive team at home with dual-threat quarterback Bryce Carpenter. For the Eagles, wideout Bryce Miller has a team-best 14 receiving touchdowns.
Prediction: Venice 30, East Lake 17
Navarre (11-1) at St. Augustine (11-1)
Senior running back Michael Carter has over 2,300 total yards and 38 touchdowns for Navarre. Senior wideouts Jordan Williams and Dante Wright each have six scores through the air. For St. Augustine, senior quarterback Cole Northrup is in for a tough matchup, but this kid is poised to say the least.
Prediction: Navarre 34, St. Augustine 27
Charlotte (11-0) at Ft. Myers (8-4)
This is a rematch of a Week 4 meeting where Charlotte went to Ft. Myers and won 24-6. The Fightin’ Tarpons handled a really solid Clearwater team 52-25 last week while Ft. Myers blew past Naples 28-7. These two teams are coming on at the same time. Expect a close game to start.
Prediction: Charlotte 21, Ft. Myers 10
Immokalee (8-4) at Jesuit (11-0)
This is a matchup of two highly talented running backs in senior Malik Davis for Jesuit and Malcolm Jackson for Immokalee. The Tigers are continuing to excel at home with senior quarterback Danny Boon and Travell Harris grinding it out offensively. Junior linebacker Braden Gilby is a hard hitter for Jesuit.
Prediction: Jesuit 30, Immokalee 23
South Sumter (10-1) at Bolles (11-0)
The Bulldogs play host to Bushnell South Sumter in this Class 4A state semifinal. South Sumter comes into this one averaging 39.6 points per game with three straight 40 plus performances. Bolles is averaging 52 points on offense this season with seniors Mac Jones and Amari Terry running the show.
Prediction: Bolles 35, South Sumter 14
Berkeley Prep (9-2) at Trinity Christian (9-3)
The Conquerors have won three straight Class 3A state titles while Berkeley Prep has never appeared in a state championship. Senior running back Gordon Stetson is the workhorse for the Buccaneers who face a deep Trinity Christian group. Berkeley Prep must start fast to have a chance.
Prediction: Trinity Christian 31, Berkeley Prep 20
Northside Christian (10-2) at Champagnat Catholic (10-1)
Senior quarterback Griffin Alstott is on fire right now fresh off his six touchdown performance last week. He has three true threats in Derrick Wright, Demetrius Jackson and Marcus Hooks for this Class 2A state semifinal. Johnquai Lewis is the player to keep an eye on offensively for Champagnat, he has some serious speed. The Lions defense is the key to their success.
Prediction: Northside Christian 27, Champagnat Catholic 14
2016 season prediction record: 56-12
