ST. PETERSBURG – When La’Darius Henry moved down to Florida from Georgia he was searching for better opportunities.
The 2019 athlete has certainly taken advantage of his playing time at Gibbs.
Prior to coming to Florida, Henry was always a quarterback. The Gladiators coaching staff moved the 6’3″, 180-pounder to free safety and he’s been there ever since.
He has 97 tackles, four interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in two seasons.
Henry says he started to see his confidence growing during his sophomore season.
Earlier this summer, Henry verbally committed to USF. He chose the Bulls over his other offers Valdosta State and South Alabama.
Henry loves the engineering program at USF as well coach Shaun King, coach Charlie Strong. He also wanted his family to be able to see him play in town.
He pointed to his catching ability as his biggest strength. He’s aiming to improve his footwork and says his goals for his junior season are to reel in eight interceptions and stay healthy.
Henry says it’s an unexplainable playing for coach Antonio Knox.
“It’s a blessing. I’ve been with him since freshman year,” Henry said. “He teaches me how to be a better person and man in life.”
While in Georgia, Henry also played basketball. He said there is a 50/50 chance he’ll play on the Gibbs varsity team this year. He’s debating it right now.
With two years left in high school, Henry has big plans for his career.
“My goal is to go to college, finish school and make my family happy,” he said. “Then make it to the NFL.”
More offers will come regardless of his commitment to USF. Henry is a true athlete who gets it done with his length defensively and is a huge asset on special teams with his straight line speed. He is a fun player to watch.
